Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I need perinatal psychological therapy?
You don’t need to be in crisis or have a diagnosis to seek support. You might be feeling anxious, low, overwhelmed or unlike yourself, or finding it difficult to adjust to pregnancy or life with a new baby. If things feel harder than you expected, or you’re struggling to make sense of how you feel, therapy can offer a space to explore what’s going on.
Is it normal to feel this way during pregnancy or after having a baby?
Trying for a baby, pregnancy and becoming a parent can bring up all sorts of emotions, including anxiety, sadness, guilt and uncertainty. If you’re finding things difficult, you don’t have to dismiss your feelings. You deserve support, whatever your experience looks like.
What can a perinatal psychologist help me with?
We can support you with a range of difficulties, including anxiety, low mood, intrusive thoughts, birth trauma, pregnancy loss, worries about bonding with your baby, and the emotional impact of becoming a parent. You might also want to explore changes in your identity, relationships or sense of self. You don’t need to know exactly what’s wrong before getting in touch.
What if I'm having thoughts or feelings I'm ashamed to talk about?
You might be experiencing thoughts that frighten you, feeling disconnected from your baby, or struggling with feelings you think you shouldn’t have. It can be difficult to talk about these experiences, particularly when there’s pressure to feel happy or enjoy every moment. Therapy offers a supportive, non-judgemental space to explore what’s happening and understand what support might help.
What happens in a therapy session?
Your sessions are a chance to talk about what’s been happening and how you’re feeling, at a pace that feels manageable for you. Together, we’ll explore your experiences, identify what might be contributing to your difficulties and work towards changes that feel helpful. You don’t need to prepare anything or know exactly what to say.
Will therapy help, and how many sessions will I need?
Therapy can help you make sense of difficult feelings, understand patterns of thinking, develop ways of managing anxiety or low mood, and process difficult experiences. The number of sessions depends on your specific needs and goals. We’ll discuss this together and review what feels most helpful as we go.
Can I have therapy during pregnancy, or if my baby is already here?
Yes. You can seek support at any stage of pregnancy or after your baby is born, even if your baby is older and you’re still struggling. You might want help preparing for birth, processing a previous experience, or adjusting to life as a parent. It’s never too early or too late to ask for support.
Can I fund this therapy through my insurance?
Yes, we work with all major private medical insurers. Cover can vary depending on your individual policy, so we recommend checking with your insurer before starting therapy to confirm your eligibility and any requirements for authorisation.
